Sitia is located almost at the north-east end of Crete, some 150 km from Heraklion. Besides swimming at the many beautiful beaches in the area with the clear blue waters or trying other activities, like fishing, water sports, trekking, you can visit the many points of archeological or historical interest in the area.
In the evening you can taste the traditional Cretan kitchen in the numerous restaurants and taverns in the town or try the "raki" served with "meze" a variety of local very tasty plates at the "rakadika" the local traditional cafes. You can also find quiet cafeterias or bars with music.

In the town of Sitia, you can find:
· museums (archeological, folk, local produce showroom), and
· historical sites (the Kazarma fortress, the Hellenistic town remains at Tripitos, the house of Vitsentzos Kornaros - one of the greatest Greek poets - in Piskokefalo)

Outside Sitia, there are a lot of interesting places, like:
· Vai, the famous palm-forest beach; a bit further is the Ermoupoli beach where the ruins of the ancient city of Itanos are found; on your way to Vai you can visit the historical monastery of Toplou
· Kouremenos, a beach famous for windsurfing
· Kato Zakros, a beach were you can visit the ruins of a Minoan Palace; it is also the end point of a nice gorge (it takes about an hour to walk it through)

Finally if you go further out, you can visit places, like:
· Chrisi, a beautiful island south of Ierapetra bay (one full day needed); on the way to Ierapetra you will find a lot of small bays with nice beaches; for more info go to Chrisi.
· Lassithi Plateau, up in the mountains between Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos; there you find the "Psichro Diktaion Cave" where Dias (Zeus) was born according to the Mythology; for more info go to Lassithi. |
